Name(s)

Addressees
King and council
Occupation
tin-merchants of Plymouth
Nature of request
Giles de Forstill, Morris Gages, William Helkeworth, Richard de Waturfall and John Hoggis, of Plymouth, tin-merchants, state that when they were crossing to Normandy with their merchandise, William Bruman, Hugh Gobard, Hugh Salkentyn and other burgesses of Le Havre robbed them of a great sum of money and tin, and imprisoned them, in time of peace, that is, the eighth year of the king's reign. They ask to be able to take the value of their losses from the Normans, if they can find them anywhere in England, Gascony or elsewhere.
Nature of endorsement
Certain good and loyal people are to be appointed by commission of the great seal to inquire by the oath both of the merchants and of others if the robbery and arrest contained in the petition took place as the petition claims; and by whom they were done, and of whose power they are; and of what goods and merchandise they were robbed and of what value, and into other articles etc. And when the inquisition has been returned, and the robbery found to have taken place, and the crossing overseas is closed as it is at present, then they are to have right of seizure of goods against the peers and comrades of the said robbers, provided that this right of seizure does not extend to the goods and merchandise of merchants living in England, or who have free tenements in England. And if the crossing is open when the inquisition is returned, then it is to be sent to the lords to do justice, and the ancient course is further to be followed.
