SC 8/44/2179
Date
[1334]
Description
Petitioners
Mayor and commonalty of Dublin.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners state that the suburbs contribute to their farm, but at the coming of Bruce the suburbs were burnt down to save the city. The petitioners request that they be released from half of their farm for 10 years until the surburbs are rebuilt.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that if it pleases the king that it should be ordered to the justices of Ireland that they enquire both of the suburb which was burnt and ought to contribute to the farm, and of the damages that they have suffered. The king is to be certified and what pleases the king will be done.Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Dyvelyn (Dublin), [Ireland]
Descoce (Scotland).
People mentioned
Edward de Brus (Bruce).
Note
The petition almost certainly dates to 1334 for the citizens received a pardon of half of the farm on 20 June of half of their farm (CPR 1330-4, p.553). The citizens had received an earlier pardon in 1316, but for a different portion of their farm, so this early date seems less likely (CPR 1313-17, p.471)
