Reference
SC 8/44/2156
Date
[c. 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Durham.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners show that they purchased victuals from the king and his father for £400 and now Nottingham at the king's order has levied £100 from them. The king recently pardoned the men of Northumberland, but the petitioners have been unable to obtain a discharge from their debt because the priory is in the liberty of Durham. The prior requests that the king order a writ of discharge because the liberty of Durham is in Northumberland, considering their losses in the war.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Because this grace was made to the people of Northumberland the council are not able to extend this grace to the people of the bishop without the advice of the king.
Places mentioned
Northumberland
Franchise de Duresme (Liberty of Durham)
Coldingham, [Berwickshire, Scotland].
People mentioned
Robert de Notingham (Nottingham).
Note
The petition dates to after October 1332 when the men of Northumberland received their pardon as the petition makes mention (CPR 1330-4, p.361). As the prior and convent seem to have petitioned to the treasurer that they be discharged and had this request rejected before this petition was submitted, it seems likely that this petition must date to 1333 or 1334.
