Reference
SC 8/43/2141
Date
[? 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Arnold de Dureford (Durfort), knight
Name(s)
de Dureford (Durfort), Arnold
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Fishpyc (Frespech), [Guyenne, France]
Asteford (Astaffort), [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
Arnold de Dureford, knight, who has lost the castles of Frespech and Astaffort as a result of the war, asks for compensation for his damages, so that he might be able to maintain his estate and serve the king.
Nature of endorsement
The king has ordained for the sending of certain great men with full power to do what is appropriate for him and his subjects; and he will order them that, when they have gathered information in those parts, they are to give him such remuneration as is convenient, and as might reasonably suffice.
Note
CPR 1327-30 p.526 is dated at Woodstock, 18 May 1330.CPR 1327-30 p.537 is dated at Woodstock, 16 July 1330, so the petition might date to around this time. However CPR 1334-8 p.571, a licence for the petitioner to receive an honourable charge in the service of the church of Rome, dated at Hertford, 12 January 1338, mentions him as lord of Fespuche (Fosso Podio). Did he regain this castle, or is the petition later than 1338?A note on the guard dates this petition to '? C. 1330', with reference to SC 8/43/2146 and CPR 1334-8 p.571.As CCR 1330-3 p.335 (Westminster, 3 October 1331) makes clear, there are two Arnold de Durefords, father and son, so this petitioner may not be the same as that of SC 8/43/2145 and SC 8/43/2146. CCR 1339-41 p.546 (Andover, 4 October 1340), reveals that the elder is dead by that time.
