Reference
SC 8/43/2125
Date
[c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
The Master and brothers of the Hospital of the Maison Dieu (Hospital of St Mary) of Dover
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Master and brothers of the Hospital of the Maison Dieu of Dover, which was founded by the king's ancestors and other good people to receive poor people going overseas and coming from overseas at Dover, state that the king recently asked them, by his writ, to find maintenance for life for John Lamb, his mariner of Dover, which they have done, and that he has now sent William son of Thomas le Charetter of Grove and Henry de Oldyngton with similar writs. If they are to support all these people it will be a great drain on their resources, and harm their ability to provide the alms for which they were founded, and so they request a remedy which will enable them to sustain these alms.
Nature of endorsement
Before the king (coram rege), whether he wishes to accept these excuses or not.
Places mentioned
Dover, [Kent]
Grove, [Kent]
People mentioned
John Lamb, mariner of Dover
William [le Charetter (Carter)], son of Thomas le Charetter (Carter) of Grove
Henry de Oldyngton
Note
CCR 1313-18 p.192 (the order sending William son of Thomas le Charetter of Grove to the Hospital of St John, Brackley) is dated at York, 12 August 1314: whether this is as an alternative to Dover, or whether he was sent on there is unclear.CCR 1313-8 p.220 (the first order sending Henry de Oldyngton to Dover) is dated at Windsor, 26 March 1315, and the second order sending him there, CCR 1313-8 p.319, is dated at Clipston, 6 January 1316. The order sending him to Barking, CCR 1313-8 p.437, is dated at York, 17 November 1316. This does seem to be an alternative, after he was refused at Dover, so it seems reasonable to date this petition to c. 1315.
