Reference
SC 8/38/1886
Date
[? 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Nuns of Cheshunt
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
1) The nuns state that they have lost their muniments with their house in a fire. They request that the king renew the charters and muniments according to the enrolled copies that can be found in the rolls of Chancery.2) The nuns further request that because of their impoverishment that the king grant to them that they be able to appropriate lands and rents from gifts up to a certain sum notwithstanding the statute of mortmain.1)
Nature of endorsement
For the first petition let the rolls in Chancery and if they should find charters and muniments in the rolls in the form due.2) For the second petition nothing at present.
Places mentioned
Cesthonte (Cheshunt), Hertfordshire
Note
The petition probably dates to 1315 when an exemplification was issued on the petition of the prioress, Alice de Sumery. However the patent roll reference then goes on to grant land previously granted by Henry III from estates confiscated from the canons of Cathale of which the petition does not make mention. It is therefore possible that the petition is not the same as the one that prompted the patent roll entry (CPR 1313-17, p.292).
