Reference
SC 8/34/1667
Date
[1382]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Bury St Edmunds
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners request that in the present parliament the justices and chief barons of the Exchequer be called who have full knowledge of the matters concerning their lands that were taken into the king's hand and for which they have pleaded in the Exchequer to final judgement, and that the justice and chief baron's opinions be heard, and that the king will declare his judgement as they have pursued this matter for 4 years or more. The petitioners were granted a portion of the abbey's possessions for their sustenance, and a licence to purchase more lands to augment it. However these lands were seized into the king's hand during the last vacation.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are to call to them at the quinzene of Trinity next the justices and sergeants of the king and others who are to be called and bring the record and process of which the petition makes mention before judgement is rendered in the business according to the law and reason without further delay.
Places mentioned
Bury St Edmunds, [Suffolk]
Note
The petition would seem to date to 1382 as a grant to the prior and convent, although not necessarily being made in response to this petition, is certainly closely related, and may have been a compromise to provide for the prior and convent while the protracted dispute over the appointment of a new abbot went on. The dispute between Edmund de Brumfeld who had obtained a papal provision, and John Tymworth who seems to have been either the internal or royal candidate, had been dragging on for 4 years by the end of 1382 (CPR 1381-5, p.218).
