Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/33/1608
Date
[1333-1334]
Description
Petitioners
Master, brothers and sisters of the House of God of Berwick-on-Tweed
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners show that during the siege their church and houses were demolished by the siege engines so that they had no place of refuge. The master has repaired the church and houses at his own expense, and spent more that he received, and had pledged his chalices and vestments for the repairs. The building is so weak that it cannot withstand the winter without rotting for ever, and the master in his weak position is unable to accomplish the work without great aid, wherefore the master requests that the king provide alms for the repair so that the work will not be lost, since if the king and his council will not aid them there is no-one else that will help them.
Nature of endorsement
No endorsement.
Places mentioned
Berwick-on-Tweed, [Northumberland]
Note
The petition must date to 1333-4 because it obviously follows the siege and capture of the town of Berwick by the English in 1333. The petition probably is slightly later in date than SC 8/34/1659.
