Description
Petitioners
Lords of the ships and barges of the realm.
Addressees
King and other nobles and commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The lords of the ships and barges of the realm of England state that they have often served the king with their ships and barges, with their gear and instruments, which have been greatly used and worn by this, at their own cost and to the detriment of their estate, without ever having any remuneration or allowance for their ships and barges. They request that reasonable remuneration be ordained for the future, otherwise they will not be able to maintain their ships and barges in the king's service.
Nature of endorsement
The king is of good will to reward all those who have served him.
Note
Rot. Parl. vol. III p.253a (no. 2) edits this petition as being from 11 Richard II (1387-1388). A note on the guard reads, '? 1377, apparently contemp. with preced.' SC 8/21/1007 and SC 8/21/1009 do look as though they might be contemporary, and are dated on the basis of the common petition for mariners and ship-owners edited in Rot. Parl. vol. III 66a from the roll of the parliament held at Westminster at the quinzaine of Easter, 2 Richard II (1379). However, the endorsement is quite different from that found on this petition.
