SC 8/21/1007
Date

Description
Petitioners
Mariners of the realm.
Addressees
King and other nobles and commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The mariners of the realm of England state that they have laboured long in the king's service, on sea and elsewhere, and are completely ruined. They request that their wages be increased, as they have hitherto had only 3d. a day and 6d. a week, and cannot survive on that.
Nature of endorsement
The king, on the advice of his great council, will do what seems to him is to be done.
Note
Rot. Parl. vol. III p.253a (no. 1) edits this petition as being from 11 Richard II (1387-1388). A note on the guard reads, '? 1377, cf. Rot. Parl. III, 66'. It is hard to see why this should date it to 1377. Rot. Parl. vol. III 66a is from the roll of the parliament held at Westminster at the quinzaine of Easter, 2 Richard II (1379). This might be an enrolment of the present original petition, as it petitions both for mariners and for ship-owners (see also SC 8/21/1008). On the other hand, the endorsements are not the same, and the mariners here earn 3d. a day, rather than 4d. as in Rot. Parl. vol. III 66a.
