Description

Name(s)
Hastings, Earl of Pembroke; Zouche, John; William
Addressees
King and other lords of parliament.
Nature of request
John, Earl of Pembroke, in the king's wardship, and William la Zouche of Harringworth, state that an inquest was to be held before William de Meolton, knight, now sheriff of Yorkshire, then the escheator, between the king, and the petitioners, kinsmen and heirs of William de Cauntelow, knight, and Thomas, son of Robert de Roos of Ingmanthorpe, knight, concerning certain lands in the aforesaid county. Through collusion between Robert de Roos and the Escheator, many of those empanelled were tenants of Robert de Roos, of Richard de Scrop, of Brian de Stapulton, and of other malevolent persons, and were from distant parts with no knowledge of the truth. They were challenged on these grounds and others, but the Escheator went ahead and took the inquest anyway, to the detriment of the king's right and theirs. They request a remedy, and that William de Meolton be no longer allowed to continue in office.
