Date

Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Jedburgh.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent of Jedburgh, in the diocese of Glasgow, show that they hold and have always held the church of Arthuret in the diocese of Carlisle for their own uses, and that they have and have always had the advowson of the church of Abbotsley, in the diocese of Lincoln, but that because of the war they were expelled by Edward II, who made his own presentations to these churches. Now that peace has been restored, they request that the king restore the church of Arthuret and the advowson of the church of Abbotsley to them, and to remove the clerks instituted there to their disinheritance, and to write to the bishops of the places and to other ministers of the king on this.
Nature of endorsement
Certain people are to be appointed to inquire, in the presence of the current parsons of the churches, to be summoned to attend if they wish, if the abbey of Jedburgh held the church of Arthuret before the war for its own use or not, and from what time etc., and if they were seised of the advowson of Abbotsley before the war or not, and from what time etc., and if the king presented to these churches because of the war or for some other reason, and if for some other reason then for what reason, and how; and when the inquisition has been returned, justice is to be done.

Note
CPR 1327-1330 p.496 is dated at Windsor, 22 February 1330. The earlier dating is based on CIM 1307-49 pp.257-8 (no.1035): the commission was given on 29 October 2 Edward II (1328) and the inquisition was held on the Monday before the conversion of St Paul (January 1429): this is presumably the inquisition mentioned in the endorsement. The petition must date from after the Treaty of Northampton in 1328.
