SC 8/15/722
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Scalebrok.
Name(s)
de Scalebrok, John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Scalebrok shows that he was with the earl of Lancaster in his quarrel with Despenser as he was his tenant and man. Because of this, he was pursued by Despenser and Haudlo and his goods were taken to the value of £300. Also they forced him to make a recognizance of forty marks to Haudlo, which money he has to pay him and have his acquittance before he is able to enter his house or live in his country. He requests that a remedy be ordained or granted to him.
Nature of endorsement
Because he was fined with his consent, nothing is to be done.
People mentioned
[Thomas of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
Hugh le Despenser, [Earl of Winchester], the father
John de Haudlo (Hadlow).
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1327 as it is clearly a petition by one of those who followed Thomas of Lancaster and suffered under the Despenser regime. It is extremely unlikely that the petitioner would have wished or been able to make this complaint before early 1327. The recognizances to Despenser and to Haudlo was made in June 1323 (CCR 1318-23, p.715).
