Nature of request
John Giffard of Cotterstock, clerk, makes 3 complaints:1) He states that although he holds only part of the lands which belonged to John de Houby, formerly sheriff of Northamptonshire, the present sheriff is distraining him for the whole debt which John de Houby owed the king. He requests a remedy.2) He also complains that although his lands and tenements have been assessed at the king's command, and two inquisitions held and returned in the exchequer, the sheriff distrains John beyond the sum of these assessments, so often and so grievously - even extending to the oxen for his plough - that he cannot work his land. Again he requests a remedy.3) He also complains that the sheriff is distraining him for this debt in land and tenements that never belonged to John de Houby, and in the common pastures belonging to these lands. He requests a remedy, as law and reason demands.

He is to have a writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer that, when they have seen and examined the petition, they are to do what is just.

Note
Date given on the evidence of Rot. Parl. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions probably all do belong to 18 Edward II, although there is no indication that they were presented either at the non-parliamentary assembly of October 1324 or the parliament of June 1325.
