Description
Petitioners
Robert de Grimesdale of Carlisle.
Name(s)
de Grimesdale, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Robert de Grimesdale of Carlisle complains that John de Harcla disseised him of two hundred acres of land and twelve acres of meadow, with appurtenances, in Upmanby, and continued this disseisin until he enfeoffed his brother Andrew with these tenements. They are now in the king's hand because of Andrew's forfeiture. Robert requests grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Certain faithful people are to be appointed in Chancery to enquire into the contents of the petition, who, when they have examined the complainant's charters and muniments, in the presence of the keeper of the lands, are to enquire into the disseisin on the oath of upright and law-worthy men - how, by whom, when, and all other circumstances concerning that affair. And they are to produce that inquisition in chancery as soon as possible etc., so that the king, informed on this matter, might do his will.
Places mentioned
Cardoyle (Carlisle), [Cumberland]
Ukmanbye (Upmanby), [Cumberland].
People mentioned
John de Harcla
Andrew de Harcla.
Note
Date given on the evidence of Rot. Parl. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions probably all do belong to 18 Edward II, although there is no indication that they were presented either at the non-parliamentary assembly of October 1324 or the parliament of June 1325.
