- Nature of request
- The archbishop of York states that custody of the spiritualities of the bishopric of Carlisle belong to him in time of vacancy, as the temporalities belong to the king. However, during the last vacancy, the king's ministers, especially Robert de Barton, keeper of the temporalities, took from the churches of Penrith and Dalston tithes of wool and lambs, mortuary gifts, offerings, pensions, revenues and other spiritual rights. The archbishop requests a swift and suitable remedy for these things. Nor should the fact that during a previous vacancy Edward I's ministers wrongly and without warrant took tithes of wool and lambs from the church of Penrith be considered as a precedent.
- Nature of endorsement
- A writ is to be issued to Robert de Barton, lately keeper, that he is to inform the king in Chancery as to why he took, for the king's benefit, the tithes, mortuary gifts and other spiritual things mentioned in the bill, from the churches of Penrith and Dalston.
