Reference
SC 8/7/317
Date
[1334]
Description
Petitioners
Prior of Brinkburn.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of Brinkburn
Nature of request
The prior of Brinkburn states that King Edward, the grandfather of the present king, by his charter gave permission to William de Felton to give the prior sixteen shillings of rent in Newcastle upon Tyne - as appears by their charter, a transcript of which is sewn to this petition. And afterwards, in the eyre of Hugh de Cressingham, it was presented that the prior had purchased the rent without the king's permission, so the justices ordered that it be taken into the king's hand. Afterwards the rent was granted to the prior to answer for the issues. He requests a charter for this rent, to hold for himself and his successors, and a pardon for the arrears, as his house has been ruined by the Scottish wars.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Let the other petition be seen, and let execution be made according to its endorsement.
Places mentioned
Brenkeburn (Brinkburn), [Northumberland]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Edward I, king of England
William de Felton
Hugh de Cressingham, justice.
Note
The pardon found as CPR 1330-1334, p.551 is dated at Newcastle upon Tyne, 16 June 1334. This petition and SC 8/36/1798B seem to be roughly contemporary, but as this petition mentions another in its endorsement, it is probably the later one, and SC 8/36/1798B the earlier petition mentioned.
