Description
Petitioners
Laurence de Tresham.
Name(s)
de Tresham, Laurence
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Laurence de Tresham states that he and Master Thomas de Sedynton acquired the manor of Passenham as joint feoffees, to have and hold to them, and to Laurence's heirs, and they were in seisin, receiving the profits, between the feast of St Andrew and Christmas. Then Walter de Langeton took the manor into the king's hand, for hatred of Thomas and for greed to possess it, and he kept Thomas and Laurence out for Thomas' whole lifetime. After his death, Thomas, earl of Lancaster claimed that the manor was held of him, of his honour of Tutbury -with no mention of Laurence - and had seisin out of the king's hand. Laurence offered him his services and asked if he could be his tenant according to his purchase and right. The earl refused. Laurence initiated an assise of novel disseisin against the earl, Elias Pocheys, then escheator, and other disseisors in Northamptonshire, but when the earl ordered that his head be cut off, he did not dare to pursue his right further. The manor is now in the king's hand after the earl's death; therefore Laurence requests grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. The process of how the manor was separated from the seisin of Roger, earl of Lancaster is to be examined, and when this has been done, there is to be further consultation etc.

Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it is clearly in the aftermath of the baronial revolt of 1322.One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
