Nature of request
The bishop requests that the king preserve his franchise of the church of Durham, and lift his hand from those lands of Hart and Hartness, and Barnard Castle and Gainford that were seized into the king's hand by Clitherhoe and Irreis, although by the bishop's franchise no royal officers or escheators might enter the franchise to seize lands, or perform other offices.1)
Nature of endorsement
Clitherhoe and Irreis are ordered by a writ of the king that they personally appear before the king's council at Westminster in the octave of Holy Trinity to inform the council on the matters referred to in the petition, and if they are not able to come personally then they are to inform the king of the reason for their entry into the liberty with the all the circumstances concerning the king's rights in the same.2) The bishop appoints in his place Elmdon, Hosebrigg, and Brunte to pursue this petition and his other petitions before the king and his council, and to respond to the answers.3) Before the king's council at Westminster in the quindene of Easter.4) Before the great council.
