Description
Petitioners
Henry de Lancaster; Maud de Lancaster, wife of Henry de Lancaster
Name(s)
de Lancaster; de Lancaster; de Lancaster, Henry; Maud; Henry
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The Lancasters request the return of divers fees that are Maud's inheritance, and which her grandfather, Patrick de Chaworth, died seised of, as can be proved by inquisitions made at the king's command, but which following Chaworth's death, Earl Richard encroached upon. Patrick de Chaworth's sons, Pain and Patrick respectively sued the earl, but died during their suit, and the fees continued in the hand of the earl during Maud's minority, and have now come into the king's hands by the earl's death.
Nature of endorsement
They should sue before the king. And the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are ordered by a writ of Chancery to examine the rolls, and memoranda of the Exchequer, and the charters and other evidence from the time of the earl of Cornwall and Richard his father, and they are to certify the lieutenant of the king of what they find. And the inquisitions made should be returned into the presence of the lieutenant in which this endorsement is written. And when the premises that should be enquired into have been examined they should be certified to the king in the next parliament after the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist so that he can see in the future what can be done.
