Reference
SC 8/2/81
Date
[c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Many parsons of the archdeaconry of Stowe.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The parsons request that their reduction from taxation on tithes be allowed from the time that the reduction was granted to them, as they have paid according to the reduction until now. They purchased a reduction of the taxation on ordinary tithes for the taxation of the Holy Land which was to be levied on the benefices of the Church for 6 years after 3 years had passed. However, the prior of St Catherine, collector of the tax in the archdeaconry has said that he cannot have an allowance for the reduction in the Exchequer, and to pay the tax has distrained the parsons.1)
Nature of endorsement
It is to be expedited by the treasurer.2) The parsons should have a writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to provide a remedy for the contents of the petition.
Places mentioned
Stowe, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
[Henry Woodlock], Bishop of Winchester
[John Dalderby], bishop of Lincoln
Prior of St Catherine, Lincoln.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1315 by the title in Rot. Parl., vol I, p.314, noting a related petition to be for the parliament held at Westminster in the octave of Hillary, 8 Edw. II, though the petition in Rot. Parl., vol I, p.314a (no. 103) is clearly not the same one as the extent one here, it must closely date to it.
