Report of James Adair, Recorder of London, on Jonathan Payne, initially tried and convicted by Lord Loughborough in the 'last' December session, for stealing a watch. The prisoner has referred to judge Adair in his petition [wanting] and the judge then states that if such a claim be considered a 'wilful falsehood' this would be grounds for reporting against him but he has considered this to be a mistake. Grounds for clemency: youth (age not given), the crime is not grave enough for the prisoner to be sent to Africa, there being no other means of sending him out of the kingdom the prosecutor has engaged himself to send the prisoner to East Indies aboard the ship 'Asia' which is ready to sail. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to transport himself for the term of sentence.
Folios 100-101.
