Description

Report of James Adair, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (James Brown, from Lombard Street in London, considered by the judge to be a man of 'credit and veracity') on behalf of Thomas Clarke, convicted at the Old Bailey[?] in London, for stealing a few articles, value 41/-. Grounds for clemency; youth (not yet 20 years), previous good character, came from an industrious and worthy family, read religious books whilst in prison, offered employment if released, inconsistencies on the indictment/witnesses, and the jury recommended him to a free pardon; Brown's letter/petition included most of the details from a earlier petition [wanting] that had been signed by a part of jury, several members of the Common Council, merchants and wholesale dealers (he gives examples of the petitioners). Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: to transport himself for 7 years.
