Description

Marlborough to Boyle: Boyle has sent an extract of Admiral Leake's instructions to The Hague for approval; it will take time before the orders can reach Vice Admiral Wasenaer. It is true what Robinson writes, that Count Piper and the other two Swedish ministers were promised £2,500 p.a. each, but Marlborough sees no reason to pay it now. The question of giving the king of Prussia [Frederick I] the titles of Mecklenburg and prince of Orange. He will prepare an answer for the Muscovite ambassador. Ghent has fallen as a result of refusing to admit Major General Murray, and Bruges has since shared its fate. A skirmish with the enemy's rearguard at the Dender. He intends to march for Lessines that evening. [Continued the following day] his army has crossed the river [Dender] near Lessines. The duke of Burgundy has passed through Ninove heading for Gavere. Marlborough has received a letter from Brigadier Chanclos saying that Oudenaarde was invested that morning. Dated at camp at Herfelingen. ff. 109-112
