Marlborough [to Harley]: it was intended to besiege Nieuwpoort first, but there were too many difficulties. The enemy are attempting to take the field in Spain, and he expects the elector [of Bavaria] to make trouble in Brabant. He believes that the enemy will attempt to relieve Dendermonde, but that Brigadier Meredyth is ready for them. He encloses a petition from deputies of Bruges regarding their trade.
