The Ivory Coast became an autonomous republic in the French Community in December 1958, and proclaimed its full independence outside the Community in August 1960. The UK Embassy in Abidjan opened in 1960, prior to which relations were handled through the consulate in Dakar, Senegal. Abidjan ceased to be the political and administrative capital of the Ivory Coast in 1983, when it was replaced by Yamoussoukro, but the UK Embassy remains in Abidjan.
