Administrative / biographical background

Burundi became independent in 1962, at which time the former British Consulate to the Belgian Trust Territory of Ruanda and Urundi at Usumbura was raised to embassy status. The new embassy remained responsible for British relations with both Burundi and Rwanda. Usumbura was renamed Bujumbura in 1962.
