George William Frederick Villiers, 4th earl of Clarendon and 4th baron Hyde was born in London on 12th January 1800, the grandson of Thomas Villiers 1st earl of Clarendon and the eldest son of George Villiers and Theresa, daughter of 1st Baron Boringdon.
He had a wide and varied career in the diplomatic service, serving in Russia, Ireland, France and Madrid until October 1839 when he entered Lord Melbourne's ministry as Lord Privy Seal. Throughout the rest of his career he held a variety of offices in Whig ministries, and served three terms of office as secretary of state for foreign affairs: February 1853 - February 1858, November 1865 - July 1866 and December 1868 until his death on 27th June 1870.
He married in 1839 Katherine Grimston, eldest daughter of first earl of Verulam.
