Folio 158: Stormont to Weymouth. The perfidy of the French ministers is now beyond the possibility of doubt. His informer, who has never yet been mistaken, says that Deane and Franklin have constant contact with ministers through Chaumont. Deane has changed his lodgings on the advice of Vergennes and, also on his advice, has sent a memorial to Portugal, asking her to change the orders issued against the Americans in the last reign. Sartine has engaged several merchants to build 2 large ships with 60 and 64 guns for them. Alderman Lee is to go to Vienna, Izard to Tuscany and Arthur Lee to Spain. Deane's brother and Carmichael are to go to America on the Hippopotame.
