Folio 214: Stormont to Weymouth. He has secret information of the immediate arming of 10 ships of the line at Toulon, due, he believes, to the likelyhood of hostilities between Russia and Turkey. Turkey is in such a bad state, that Russia could drive her out of Europe. Maurepas said Russia must not be allowed to take Constantinople. Britain would be mad to allow it. There is talk of a treaty between Russia, Prussia and Britain, with secret articles. Maurepas doubts this. Estaing has warned of the defenceless state of Brest and 8 battalions are to be sent and the fortifications improved.
