Folio 264: Rochford to Shelburne. He asked Choiseul for the release of 3 sailors, accused of smuggling, whose boat and cargo had been condemned. This led to a discussion about reciprocity and differences between French and English laws. Choiseul heatedly referred to d'Eon, who is publishing things offensive to France and her king. France had warned Wilkes not to do the same. Now, if someone in France published insults to the king of Great Britain, he would try to persuade the king of France to grant him a pension, to encourage him. He also complained of discrimination over duties on French manufactures. It has been agreed that the archduchess Charlotte will marry the king of Naples. The queen is becoming weaker.
Date and place: 1767 Dec 10 Paris.
