Folio 191: Remonstrances presented to the King of France by the Court of Parliament [of Paris], answering his rebuke for having imprisoned the curé of St. Etienne du Mont [see f.38]. Parliament claims to be upholding the King's authority, which overrides that of the church save in matters purely spiritual, and that it is contrary to the laws of God and France to demand billets de confession and the name of a confessor, in order to administer communion or the last rites. Parliament raises the whole issue of relations between Church and State, citing numerous previous decrees and pointing to the dangers of the variations in Church practices throughout France.
