Description

This series contains the minutes and papers of the committee set up in 1972 by the then Secretary of State for Education, Margaret Thatcher, to consider the teaching the use of English in schools, including reading, writing and speech; it was chaired by the historian, Sir Alan Bullock (later Lord Bullock of Leafield). The series includes papers of sub-committees on language, reading, monitoring progress on basic reading ability, teaching in primary and secondary schools, as well as a draft of the final report.

The remit of the Committee of Inquiry into Reading and the Use of English was as follows: to consider all aspects of teaching the use of English, including reading, writing and speech; how present practice might be improved and the role that initial and in-service teacher training might play; to what extent arrangements for monitoring the general level of attainment in these skills can be introduced or improved.

The committee made its recommendations in 1974 and the final report was published as A Language for Life (London, 1975).
