Folio 152: R. Walpole to Earl of Rochford. Account of a lengthy interview with Martinho de Mello on commercial matters, including the ban on French textiles, with supporting documentation (ff.175-218) and his own lengthy comments thereon, and his rebuttal of the Portuguese arguments (f.167). Lengthy discussion of the Argyle affair, with arguments on both sides. Master and pilot of Argyle finally released, but it may be more difficult to regain the ship and the cargo, which he continues to claim. Martinho de Mello's complaint, "though in a calm and friendly manner" of the gross and continued contraband trade by officers and crews of the Falmouth packet-boats. He thinks there may be some substance in this, and perhaps orders should be given in England to check it. Discussion on the new regulations for the corn-trade. De Mello considers the new government of France to be a weak one. Significance of the Papal Nuncio at Paris making a formal call on Madame du Barry. Attitude of Papal Nuncio at Lisbon, "of the family of Conti, with whom I live in great friendship," who has also strongly denied that any secret Franco-Portuguese marriage is being negotiated.
Date and place: 1772 May 18 Lisbon.
