Folio 214. Charles XI of Sweden to the 'ministers' of the six 'associated' [i.e. 'upper'] circles. In reply to their missive of Jan 12/22 (see f.63) enclosing an [advanced] copy of the recess of Jan 13/23, entreating him [as sovereign of his kingdom being one of the estates of the empire as well as one of the directors of the circle of Lower Saxony] to accede to the defence association and to send a military contingent: approves of the aims of the association; promises to instruct his 'government' of Bremen as 'directorial agent' to enter, as a matter of urgency, into consultations with the other circle offices, but regretfully declines the request for military aid as the circle militia has to be kept intact and undivided in the face of internal disorders throughout the circle. Heading, [in Stepney's hand], 'The King of Swedens answer to ye ministers of ye 6 circles'.
