E 386
1433-1564
Writs of process derived from the pipe rolls, sheriffs' petitions of allowance, and related documents.
They include inquisitions post mortem and writs of certiorari on various matters affecting the Crown's ancient revenues. There are also writs of distraint against various Crown debtors, including those owing arrears on subsidies, and for outstanding sums owed by former sheriffs. The writs also include many distraints for fines imposed by the courts of common law but which remained unpaid.
Strays from Pipa files may remain amongst the loose writs in E 383

The coincidence of the appearance of the Pipa files in the year of the appointment of a reforming Treasurer suggests that they may owe their inception to the energies of Ralph, Lord Cromwell (1394?-1456). They probably continued as a separate series until the 1570s.
