Folio 107: Wich to Carteret. D'Alion new French Ambassador had first audience yesterday. De la Chetardie has not succeeded in his plan to have part in negotiation to be started with Sweden. Czarina has dissimulated and given him false hopes, and rather is determined to follow her ministers who are not averse to peace with Sweden, but wants France to have no part in the negotiations. Dispatch from Field Marshal Lacy in Finland with account of fall of Borgo. Expect soon to have news of Russians at Helsinfors. Merchants in St.Petersburg, much to my annoyance have deposited money for Iron at College of Commerce, against my directions. Much difficulty no doubt before they have money returned. Dated Moscow, 9 Aug 1742.
