Folio 36: Wich to Carteret. Ministers examining our treaty have reported to Czarina and a conference was arranged for me with Great Chancellor and Bestuzev, Czarina has reasons to cancel everything done by former administration but gives HM assurance of her regard and desire to preserve that which has subsisted for so long between their two crowns, that a draught new treaty of mutual defence will be sent to me, with no alteration of the essentials. He also informed me that de la Chetardie would have his audience of leave next Sunday and thereafter things would take another turn. He had tried to make Czarina halt in Finland but her ministers have insisted that she sends orders to Field Marshal Lacy to advance. Russia convinced of the advantage of visiting with maritime powers. We will be glad to see effect of their good intentions. Dated Moscow, 22 July 1742.
