Folio 156: Finch to Harrington. Bowie despatched with treaty and separate articles. Description of inclusions and exclusions and separate articles. Extraordinary ideas of Count Golovkin making difficulties; finally ordered by princess regent to desist. The present critical juncture in Empire and the disposition of the Swedish diet had larger share in settling this treaty finally than I had, otherwise HM might still be waiting an outcome. Osterman solicitous about arrival of our stipulated squadron in case of rupture with Sweden, as Russia cannot have more than 14 men of war and frigates fit to go to sea. 6 new ships coming from Archangel, if not prevented by war with Sweden, and Osterman, apprehending their interception, suggests that our squadron might join up with them before entering the sound and carry them up the Baltic. I suggested it was premature and it was dropped. Account of presents and their distribution to ministers plenipotentiary after treaties, similarly practised in Sweden. Dated St Petersburg 5 Apr 1741.
