Folio 17: Harrington to Finch. Ff. 3 and 9 with accounts given of conversations with Count Osterman, pleased HM Now it appears Russians way of thinking altered and HM thinks that continuing to press him on the treaty might retard rather than forward it. Therefore hereafter in conferences with him show we are not satisfied with his dilatoriness nor edified by the specious reasons given for it, and you will abstain from pressing him further with particulars of which Russians are already aware and HM's feelings. They can get in touch with you when they are ready. Note taken of recommendations from Osterman to HM, viz. sounding out Dutch ministers about new system in opposition and dangerous designs of France and proposal to Denmark of prolongation of present subsidiary treaty. With regard to Denmark, HM will not omit to make new efforts to keep that prince from abandoning himself to France. Design which occasioned Sparre's passion to King of Sweden entirely disappointed by HM's treaty with Hesse Cassel and death of King of Prussia. Ill-intentions of Prussia should first break out against Russia unless Czarina makes sacrifice without hostilities to Sweden.
