Folio 117: Rondeau to Townshend. Cabinet Council soon to be named, so that all secret affairs should not be laid before the Senate. This would have been accomplished earlier except Osterman trying to get Jaguzinski sent as ambassador to Poland to prevent him being a member of that council. Insinuations made by Westphal [f.56] have hopefully had the desired effect as duke of Liria has shown me a letter from Spanish secretary at Vienna saying that the Czarina insists that the Emperor help the duke of Mecklenburg procure possession of his duchy. Baron Mardefeld, the Prussian envoy, seems devoted to Count Wratislaw, saying his master will observe all promises with Vienna despite his reconciliation with Great Britain. Difficult to believe if our court and Berlin establish good relationship. Afraid that if new instructions do not arrive Imperialists will hinder a sincere reconciliation until the Emperor has made peace with allies of Seville. Our merchants suffer from want of understanding between both courts. Regiments in camp with Czarina to be increased to 17,500 men. Dated Moscow, 25 May 1730.
