Description

Folio 123: Jefferyes to Stanhope. Baron Mardefeld left here for Aland on the 18th and Osterman on the 22nd followed him. The Baron promises himself success, hoping to return in 6-7 weeks. He says the queen of Sweden intends to yield up to the Czar his conquests on this side of the River Neva. Lowenwolde from Livonia here in place of Mardefeld, now titled Chamberlain to his Prussian Majesty. Major-General Jaguzinski goes to Sweden with condolences and congratulations but not passport. He will await it at Aland. Neglin has left without discovering the Czar's attitude to the duke of Holstein. It is thought that the main pretext was to secure papers brought by Stamke from Aland. Having no answer to the memorial sent to the College of Finances, have applied to the Chancery; but this promises no better results. Can only do my best. The English seamen are released from chains at Slusselburg. Letter enclosed [ff.130-132 below] from a Swede called Cederhielm, imprisoned here since the battle of Poltava. He was 3rd in office at the Swedish Chancery. Seeing their poor state, could grace and favour be extended? 20-30 guineas each to 5 or 6 men now will oblige them. If peace be concluded and their former positions be restored, they can acknowledge then their debt in some way. A Russian officer arrived here, having left Sweden on 5 March. He reported that the queen is not yet crowned. Lillienstedt preparing for a journey to Aland. Little done towards a new campaign from Sweden. Dated StPetersburg, 27 Mar 1718/9.
