A sort of journal of military operations apparently of a raiding party operating on the James River, to destroy boats and canoes and collect intelligence of enemy movements; it begins with departure from Suffolk at 2 a.m. on a Friday morning and closes with note of the party's return to Suffolk the Monday following. Intelligence was that the Marquess's army was at Chickahominy Church en route for Richmond, Tarleton near Petersburg. The suggested date is pencilled on, but a slip laid in suggests the expedition is that mentioned in Clinton-Cornwallis Controversy Vol. II, p. 33, under Lt. Col. Simcoe, June 1781.
