Before the Union with the United Kingdom on 1 January 1801, Ireland had a separate Army with its own organization and establishment. Thereafter Ireland remained a separate command and the Irish regiments retained their Irish identity, but the Army was merged with the British Army. All power of appointment to regular army regiments and of military command were transferred to the Commander in Chief in England.
