The files in this series have been selected to illustrate the work of the department and to demonstrate the rationale behind the main financial policy decisions.
The Finance Department was responsible for all the financial aspects of the National Coal Board's policy and for providing financial advice at all levels of management. It protected the assets of the board and operated internal checks, and secured the availability of cash to enable the operations of the board to be carried out. It also maintained the accounts of the NCB and exercised control over the regional accounting offices. In the late 1950s it took over responsibility for superannuation accounts from the Secretary's Department while in 1975, the audit function was re-organised and a separate totally independent Audit Department established.
