Administrative / biographical background

The Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company Ltd. was formed in 1864 to work the collieries in the Aberdare and Rhymney Valleys of South Wales formerly owned by Thomas Powell. The company was concerned with both the winning and marketing of coal both at home and abroad, and established subsidiary companies abroad to cope with the overseas market. The company also owned coke ovens and by-product plants, brick and engineering works.

The company was registered in 1935 as Powell Duffryn Associated Collieries Ltd. to amalgamate the undertakings of the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company Ltd. and Welsh Associated Collieries Ltd. These two companies finally merged in 1944 when the name changed to Powell Duffryn Ltd.

On nationalisation in 1946 the functions and technical papers of the Powell Duffryn Research Laboratory, which co-ordinated research and development for the Company, were transferred to the Coal Research Establishment of the National Coal Board at Stoke Orchard.
