Bonham to Hsü Kuang-chin. Consul J. Bowring at Canton has been investigating case of smuggling by British merchants and has invited Hoppo to Consulate to discuss preventive measures. Hoppo responds by saying that each should mind his own business. This is not best way to ensure full receipt of taxes. Requests information on results of investigation into death of Ch'en Ch'ing-chen.
