Description

[WRIGHT v WARD, 1738].

[The most likely case is Broughton Wright and Ann Wright, the younger (son and daughter of Broughton Wright, merchant of London, deceased) against John Ward, esq, but perhaps a later suit.]

Broughton Wright the elder conducted business for, among others, Richard Elletson of Jamaica: many letters relate to the daughters of Richard and Susannah Elletson, who were looked after by Broughton Wright and Ann Wright his wife, the parents, in London.

Gives details of his financial difficulties; Richard Elleston’s business transactions and property in Lincoln; the education, health and clothing of the Elletson daughters; the disappointment of his own son’s business transaction; the state of the sugar and rum market in London.
  • C108/280/22: account book used for 2 purposes:
    • accounts of the ship America, July 1697-June 1700, bound from London to Batavia and back. Mentions Broughton Wright.
    • letter book of Ann Wright, 13 April 1729-22 Oct 1732. Includes copies of 43 letter sent from Ann Wright to Susanna Elletson (23), Richard Elletson (1), Mrs Harris (16), and Mrs Cooke (3). The letters cover orders placed with Ann Wright; news of the Misses Elletsons education and health; fashions in England; tradespeople's prices; rumours that the Wright’s are not treating the Misses Elletson properly; financial disputes between the Wrights and the Elletsons; fruit and sweetmeats etc.

A collection of small domestic objects, probably belonging to Mrs Ann Wright, were removed for safe-keeping as follows:

  • Wooden lemon squeezer, now SC 16/59;
  • Beadwork, possibly weight for lace cover, now SC 16/60;
  • Bodkin, with turned bone knob-shaped handle, and protective sheath, now SC 16/61;
  • Small metal bottle with pierced top and cap, possibly used for smelling salts, now SC 16/62.
