Description

Channel Islands. Map: 'An Accurate Survey And Measurement Of the Island of Jersey, Surveyed by Order of His Grace the Duke of Richmond & c. Master General of the Ordnance...': MS fair copy sheet of the Topographical Survey of Jersey; showing spot heights, hachures, coastal features, fields, roads, woodlands, place names. Scale: 7 inches to 2,100 yards. Compass star. Surveyed by 'Surveying Draftsmen': William Gardner, Chief; Thomas Cubitt, Henry Lauzan, George Pink, Thomas Yeakell and Thomas Gream. Bears Board of Ordnance stamps. Endorsed: '(Original Survey)' and 'W. Gardner 1795'.

For the initial rough sketch maps of the topographical survey see MPHH 1/21; an engraved version with MS colouring and text see MPHH 1/41; the final engraved maps see WO 78/5549. MPH 1/344, MPH 1/462, MPHH 1/235 and MPHH 1/254 are four sets of engraved map proofs, at various stages of the engraving process.
