Description

County Durham: Holy Island (now in Northumberland). Six sheets of plans and sections of Lindisfarne Castle. (1-4) Three copies of a ground plan of the castle, showing named rooms and the road leading up the hill: (1-2) two large fragments of a single, damaged copy, perished in several places; (3-4) two complete copies. (5) Sheet bearing two sections, along the lines A-B and C-D marked on items (2-4). (6) Sheet bearing four sections, along the lines A-B, C-D, E-F and G-H marked on items (2-4); damaged at the right-hand edge. Reference note to item (2) on repairs required to be made to the castle. All items to scale: 1 inch to 10 feet. Items (3-4) and (6) bear the date 1742, which probably refers to the sheets from which they were copied; items (1-2) and (5) [?the original drawings] are undated. Item (4) copied by J Nightingale, [c1813]; items (3) and (6) are probably of about the same date. Items (2-6) endorsed, in an early nineteenth century hand, with the name of Captain Phillips; this is probably Thomas Phillips, Engineer, who was active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Dimensions: (1) 23 cm x 104 cm; (2) 52 cm x 104 cm; (3-4) each 52.5 cm x 74.5 cm; (5-6) each 47 cm x 202 cm.
